How Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Treatment in Villa Park Supports Recovery

Seeking trauma-informed care for PTSD in Villa Park? Between who you were before and who you are now, a chasm may seem impossible to cross. Your brain’s threat-detection system has been fundamentally rewired by trauma, producing distressing manifestations including intrusive flashbacks, hypervigilance, emotional numbness, sleep disruption, and persistent anxiety that extends far beyond the initial event. Effective PTSD recovery requires both deep expertise in how trauma affects the nervous system and specialized clinical credentials. We understand the legitimate concerns that can make treatment feel daunting:

  • Might therapy itself trigger my symptoms rather than alleviate them?

  • What if I’m encouraged to revisit traumatic memories without first building sufficient emotional tools?

  • Is my provider actually trained and certified in trauma work, or do they rely on general therapeutic approaches?

  • Could treatment expenses become unmanageable within my financial situation?

These questions demonstrate real clinical insight and authentic understanding – they merit serious consideration. Meaningful healing should happen in an environment that is rooted in trauma neuroscience, compassionate in approach, and responsive to your current emotional readiness.

At Connections Mental Health, we combine cutting-edge neuroscience with evidence-supported healing modalities for trauma recovery. Our trauma specialists employ structured, phase-based treatment frameworks designed to stabilize emotions first, then gradually work with traumatic material. We also offer flexible outpatient services through the District Behavioral Health Group.

Meet Our Clinicians

Joana Constante Freitas

Therapist - ACSW, MSW, EMDR Certified

My passion for becoming a therapist was shaped by my own experiences navigating cultural challenges, trauma, and substance-related struggles within my community. These experiences deepened my understanding of how important it is to feel seen, supported, and understood during life’s difficult moments. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of California, Irvine and a Master’s in Social Work from California Baptist University. I practice with both cultural and spiritual competence, and I have experience working with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and spiritual traditions. My therapeutic style is direct, honest, and compassionate. I don’t believe you need to have everything figured out to begin therapy. I integrate evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and trauma-focused work to support healing and growth. I strive to create a safe, supportive space where you can show up as you are, without judgment or pressure to perform. Whether you are working through trauma, grief, identity challenges, or substance use, my goal is to support you in building insight, resilience, practical coping tools, and a stronger connection with yourself. Outside of therapy, I enjoy spending time in nature, practicing my spirituality, playing music, and staying active through sports. I value real, meaningful connections, and I bring that same authenticity into my work with clients.

Huy Nguyen

Therapist - ASCW

My name is Huy Nguyen, and I am an Associate Clinical Social Worker. My therapeutic approach is grounded in empathy, collaboration, compassion, and individualized care. I use a warm and direct approach, creating a space where clients can feel supported while also being gently challenged when it can help them grow. I believe that clients are the experts of their own experiences, and my role is to work alongside them to identify the tools and strategies that can help them navigate life more effectively. I draw from a variety of therapeutic approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Brainspotting. I tailor these approaches to each client’s unique experiences, needs, and goals rather than believing that one approach works for everyone. My decision to become a therapist was deeply influenced by my own personal experiences with therapy and witnessing how transformative that process can be. Those experiences shaped my belief that therapy can provide not only a place to heal, but also a space to better understand ourselves, develop new ways of coping, and build a life that feels more meaningful. My hope is not to help clients avoid the waves that life inevitably brings, but to help them find calmer seas while developing the skills and confidence to navigate the big waves when they come. Healing may look different for everyone, and I want to help each client discover what healing means for them and find their own way forward.

Ryan Ruiz

Therapist - AMFT

Ryan Ruiz is a dedicated and compassionate therapist at Connections Mental Health, bringing over seven years of experience and more than 3,000 hours of clinical work in substance use and mental health treatment. With a strong foundation in addiction recovery, trauma, and co-occurring disorders, Ryan has provided individual and group therapy across reputable treatment centers, developing personalized treatment plans that foster long-term healing and growth. His expertise spans mindfulness, trauma recovery, and psychodrama, and he has been an active member of interdisciplinary teams focused on clients’ mental, emotional, and physical wellness. As a Marriage and Family Therapist Associate, Ryan is deeply committed to expanding his clinical knowledge and staying at the forefront of evidence-based approaches in addiction and mental health care. His therapeutic style blends empathy, structure, and innovation, helping clients navigate challenges with clarity and confidence. Ryan’s holistic approach emphasizes treating the whole person—addressing both the addiction and the underlying issues that contribute to distress and dysfunction. Beyond his clinical role, Ryan is passionate about mindfulness, personal growth, and mental health advocacy. His dedication to helping others extends into the broader community, where he supports initiatives that promote awareness and recovery. With his extensive experience, compassion, and unwavering commitment to client well-being, Ryan Ruiz is a valued member of the Connections Mental Health team, guiding individuals toward lasting change and self-discovery.

Comprehensive PTSD Care Throughout California - Building Your Path to Sustained Wellness

According to JAMA Psychiatry research, trauma-informed interventions produce substantial gains for approximately two-thirds of individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder, illustrating the power of evidence-based treatment. By moving beyond reactive patterns and avoidance, structured care enables gradual exposure to triggers while fostering improved emotional regulation. This progress facilitates fuller participation in daily activities with reduced anxiety and greater calm.

Our California post-traumatic stress disorder treatment program provides:

  • Systematic exposure work using carefully calibrated, step-by-step methods

  • Evidence-based techniques for managing physiological and psychological responses

  • Therapeutic support toward restoring feelings of security during routine interactions

  • Practical strategies that encourage active living rather than isolation

  • A clinically-validated framework promoting sustained improvement and resilience

Our approach emphasizes processing emotional reactions as they surface, rather than analyzing them abstractly. Treatment incorporates nervous system regulation training, mindfulness during challenging situations, and confidence-building through real-world practice. Throughout this process, symptom severity diminishes, resulting in more balanced and predictable responses.

How Traveling in Orange County for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Treatment Can Support Recovery

Stepping away from your usual environment might be exactly what’s needed to interrupt the patterns keeping you stuck. Many people find that their everyday spaces become intricately woven with physical and emotional responses, making it challenging to access genuine healing or autonomy. Research findings from JAMA Psychiatry reveal that approximately 66% of individuals dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder saw meaningful improvement after engaging in trauma-focused therapy. Moving to an entirely new setting can reduce ingrained stress patterns and open pathways toward authentic progress without the same psychological burden.

Individuals who have pursued post-traumatic stress disorder treatment outside their home environment frequently share these experiences:

  • Meaningful separation from spaces connected to past trauma

  • Strengthened ability to build restorative daily routines

  • Reduced intensity of triggered reactions in unfamiliar spaces

  • Improved stability during your therapeutic work

  • Expanded opportunity to focus on recovery without competing pressures

Our Orange County, California location provides an environment that feels calmer and more supportive than most residential settings. By creating this healing space, we partner with you to slow automatic reactions, identify your specific stress sources more clearly, and fortify your resilience tools. Such an approach allows you to reclaim agency in your daily life, rather than having your reactions control your choices.

What Sets Our Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Treatment in Villa Park Apart?

We offer individuals in Villa Park a steady, well-supported environment that makes it easier to focus on progress without added overwhelm.

We work with adults 18 and older from a range of backgrounds, including couples, veterans, first responders, and those looking for faith-based support. For those under 18, we can help guide you toward appropriate care options. Our goal is to provide support that feels practical and aligned with your needs so you can move forward with clarity.
